Best Management Practices for Trapping Furbearers in the United States,
White 2021, Wildlife Monographs , Wiley Online LibraryThis is a new article on the AFWA program to develop Best Management Practices for Trapping in the U.S. that was recently published in Wildlife Monographs. This is a culmination of more than twenty years of scientific research—by far the largest trap testing study ever conducted.
The BMP program was initiated to improve animal welfare in U.S. trapping programs by identifying restraining traps that achieve internationally acceptable injury thresholds while remaining efficient and safe, and promoting their use among trappers.
This is an ongoing project with additional restraining traps tested annually. This publication does not include completed research on cable restraint devices or lethal traps, but future publications will focus on these methods. Stay tuned for those publications in the future.
