The annual hearings will be held from 6:30 to 9 p.m. by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and the Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department and Board as follows:

The meeting will provide an opportunity for members of the public to review the highlights of the draft long-range management plan and ask questions. The plan focuses on wildlife habitat improvement and protection of rare, threatened and endangered species. Learn more about the meeting.

This hearing will cover the proposed antlerless deer permit numbers for the 2019 hunting seasons as well as the proposed deer hunting regulation changes for 2020. The proposed rules amend the current deer management rule. Changes include modifying and expanding the timing and duration of the archery hunting season, the creation of a new antlerless deer season, a change to the number of deer that may be taken annually, a new novice hunting season, field dressing requirements for deer, and changes to the current antler-point restriction regime.  In addition, the rules allow crossbows to be used by archery hunters when hunting bear, turkey, moose or deer; deletes sections of the youth deer day and second archery license that are no longer consistent with statute; clarifies the bear rule requirements for tags, and requires the submission of bear teeth within 30 days rather than 48 hours.

Hunters, landowners and anyone else interested in Vermont’s deer should plan on attending one of the public hearings being held in March and April. This hearing will include results of Vermont’s 2018 deer  and moose seasons and prospects for deer hunting next fall as well as an opportunity for people to provide their observations and opinions regarding deer and moose.

The Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department and conservation partners will host an Open House in Wolcott on Wednesday, February 20 from 5:15 to 6:00 p.m. The Open House will be held at the Wolcott Town Hall prior to the regular Select Board meeting.

The purpose of the Open House will be to go over details and answer questions about a wildlife underpass project along Route 15 in Wolcott on lands owned by the Vermont Fish & Wildlife Department. The project promotes safe movement of wildlife under the road and is being completed through a partnership with VTrans, Vermont Fish & Wildlife, The Nature Conservancy, Lamoille Regional Planning Commission and the town of Wolcott.
