Native plants are critical to healthy, functioning ecosystems. They provide habitat and food sources for many species, preserving biodiversity. Native plants can also aid in flood resiliency and water quality improvement.
Plant native plant species when gardening, landscaping, or restoring sites on your property. Ideally, buy plants grown in Vermont as they will have resistance to local diseases and will not be carrying a new pest that could be introduced to the local community. Be aware that some nurseries grow non-native species as well so be sure to know the complete scientific name (including subspecies when appropriate) of plants you are purchasing to avoid accidental introduction of non-natives and invasives.
