Hikes for Plant Enthusiasts

Vermont Fish & Wildlife botanists and ecologists put together some of their favorite plant-focused hikes:

  • Alburgh Dunes State Park
    Extensive sand beach and dune. Swimming too!
  • Colchester Bog, UVM Natural Area
    Boardwalk. Access from Airport Park.
  • Button Bay State Park, Ferrisburgh
    Trails through cedar bluff forests.
  • Chickering Bog, East Montpelier
    Hike through The Nature Conservancy's rich woods to a boardwalk at the fen wetland. Best for orchids in mid-June.
  • Eshqua Bog Natural Area, Woodstock
    The Nature Conservancy and New England Wildflower Society manage this area. Follow the boardwalk for orchids in mid-June.
  • Gleason Brook along the Green Mountain Club Long Trail
    Park from River Road in Duxbury. Great spring wildflowers
  • Kettle Pond and Owls’ Head in Groton State Forest
    Mixed forest and outcrops
  • Kingsland Bay State Park
    Trails through cedar bluff forest
  • Molly Beatty Bog, Lewis
    In the Silvio O. Conte National Wildlife Refuge Nulhegan Basin Division
  • Moose Bog, Wenlock Wildlife Management Area
    Access from South America Road in Ferdinand
  • Mount Mansfield
    See Alpine Meadow plants. Accessed by the toll road (a fee), hiking trails, or the Stowe Mountain Resort gondola
  • Mount Philo State Parks
    Champlain Valley flora in all seasons
  • Niquette Bay State Park, Colchester
    Best for spring ephemerals anytime in May
  • Shaw Mountain
    The Nature Conservancy manages these extensive Trails. Outstanding flora
  • Snake Mountain Wildlife Management Area
    Take the hiking trail from the eastern or western parking lot and meet up with a network of trails that crisscross the ridgeline and summit of the mountain
  • Stranahan Town Forest in Marshfield
    Trails through mixed woods and forest
  • Vernon Black Gum Forest
    Vernon Town Forest
