Fishing Basics

In the sport of fishing, an angler’s equipment and understanding of fish behavior and habitats are two of the most important elements toward a fulfilling fishing adventure.

Similarly, understanding how to properly clean, prep and cook your catch can also impact your fishing experience, as can knowing how to correctly release a fish back into the water to be caught another day.

Here you’ll find basic information about fishing equipment and techniques that will help you make the most of your time on the water.

Beginner's Basics Videos

We have developed a series of videos to help new anglers get started learning how to fish in open water. The videos introduce the different types of basic fishing rods and reels and provides some instruction on how to use them. Other video topics include fishing with worms, basic fishing knots, proper fish handling for release, finding local fishing opportunities and how to cook smoked trout.
