Organizing a Fishing Tournament

Anyone holding a fishing tournament in Vermont must obtain a permit from the department.

A tournament is defined as a contest in which anglers pay a fee to enter and compete for a prize based on the quality or size of the fish they catch.

Permitting lets biologists and game wardens know when and where tournaments are occurring. Biologists can then collect biological information that is used for managing the fisheries and assuring healthy fish populations.

How Do I Apply for a Permit?

  • There is a $50.00 permit fee. The fee is waived if the tournament limits the entrants to people younger than 15 years old or is part of a Special Olympics Program.

  • Download and complete a tournament application.

  • Mail the following items at least 30 days before the tournament:>

    • Completed Application form
    • Copies of your tournament rules and advertisements
    • Check for $50

to Vermont Fish & Wildlife, 111 West Street, Essex Jct. VT 05452

You are also required to submit a reporting form after your tournament. Reporting forms are available from ANR.FWFishingTournamentPermit@vermont.gov or by calling (802) 878-1564.

Tournaments at Vermont State Parks

If you are applying for a permit for a fishing tournament to be held at a State Park, you need to contact the Park Regional Manager for that State Park prior to the tournament. The Department of Forests, Parks and Recreation (FPR) requires a Special Use Permit to use a State Park location. The fee for this permit is $50.00.
